Since time immemorial, woman has suffered because she is a woman. She has been placed sometimes on the highest pedestal of Divinity and sometimes on the lowest ladder of servility and degradation.

A stage play of Sati Ahilya is played by the collegians. Asha takes part of the ill-fated Ahilya. Indra, creating the morning effect and assuming the form of Gautam at midnight, comes to Ahilya after the departure of Gautam to the river. Ahilya and Indra go into the hut. Meanwhile, real Gautam returns and curses Ahilya, turning her into a stone.

Strange are the ways of Destiny. That once while returning from the picnic in the evening, Asha is pounced upon by a ruffian. She kept the secret buried in her heart, but somehow her brother comes to know the secret and looking with sympathy, takes her to Benaras for child's delivery.

A son is born to Asha in Benarus; but Jagdish, her brother, snatches away the child and throws it into the holy Ganges keeping it in a basket.

Kamala, a young widow, while bathing in the Ganges, sees the child, picks it up and brings to her brother's place. And then Kamla becomes unhappy because he neighbours imputed that it was her child.

Intimacy of Avinash with her, gave neighbours sufficient reason to talk about. So she requests her brother Ashok to get married.

Ashok is married with Asha. Later on she comes to know that the child belonged to her.

Quarrel arises between Asha and Ashok because of the fondness of Asha for the Child. Kamla, thinking of future happiness of her brother, leaves the place at midnight with the child.

Ashok, like other neighbours, abuses Kamla in her absence. Asha could not bear this. She exposes the truth that the child was her own and the result is that Ashok drags her and throws her out of the house.

What happened to Asha? Was her life ruined?
